Methu on course to win Kenya National Chess Championships

He is tied on five points with Elvis Likoko of Equity Bank

Joseph Methu of KCB Bank Chess Club has taken over the lead as the Kenya National Chess Championships entered day three at Charter Hall on Thursday.

Consequently, Methu puts himself in pole position to drive away with the top prize after collecting five points so far.

He is tied on five points with Elvis Likoko of Equity Bank, former champion Martin Njoroge also from KCB, and last year’s runners-up Hugh Misikho, who plays for Equity Bank as well.

Defending champion Mehul Gohil is currently in fifth place with 4.5 points after he drew his third game against Moses Andiwo from Equity Bank.

Also on the same number of points are Ben Magana and Jackson Kamau, both from KCB and Nakuru’s Sheila Mataiga.

Brian Mwangi from Equity completes the top ten with four points. In the ladies’ category, defending champion Joyce Nyaruai has maximum points after round five, the same as Sasha Mongeli.

Youngster Elizabeth Cassidy, who was recently signed by former league champions KCB, is holding well and is currently in third place with four points.

Francisca Kagwira from Nairobi Chess Academy lies in fourth place with four points as well.

Others with four points are Nicole Albright from Mavens, Mercy Ingado (Lighthouse), and Veronica Matei (JKUAT).

Former world amateur champion Madelta Glenda is having a rough tournament as she is currently placed in seventh place with 3.5 points.

Kimani Wanjiru from NCBA and Shukri Shakira from Victoria Chess Club complete the top ten positions with 3.5 points each.

The tournament concludes on Saturday with the open winner driving away a Nissan Note car.

Cash prizes amounting to Ksh. 453,000 will also be on offer for other categories.
